What Is Gluten?

Gluten is a protein.

It is a combination of two molecules, gliadin and glutenin, which are joined with starch in various grains.

Gluten is found in wheat and helps give elasticity to dough, assisting the dough to rise and keep its shape.  Gliadin is what enables bread to rise properly while glutenin is the major protein in wheat flour, making up 47% of the total protein content.

What Is Celiac Disease?

When people with Celiac Disease eat foods or use products containing gluten, their immune system responds by damaging the small intestine.

The tiny, fingerlike protrusions lining the small intestine are damaged or destroyed. Called villi, they normally allow nutrients from food to be absorbed into the bloodstream. Without healthy villi, a person becomes malnourished, regardless of the quantity or quality of food eaten.

Unfortunately, Celiac Disease does not have any symptoms.

Celiac Disease is commonly misdiagnosed. However, according to National Digestive Diseases Clearinghouse, more than 2 million people in the United States are affected by Celiac disease or roughly 1 in every 133 people.

Why Should You Go Gluten Free?

Obviously, the primary beneficiaries for maintaining a gluten-free diet are those diagnosed with Celiac Disease.

For people with celiac disease, this specialty diet is essential. For those that do not, eating a gluten-free diet may not be a requirement, but some do have a sensitivity to gluten or wheat that would not be diagnosed.

However, it has been noted that if you do not have a gluten sensitivity, sometimes a gluten-free diet may force you to miss out on some very important nutrients.

A common misconception has spread like wildfire about this fad diet is that if you maintain a gluten-free diet in the absence of a gluten sensitivity, your diet may help you lose weight or eat better.  Unfortunately, there have been no studies to support either of these claims.

Maintaining a high protein diet has been proven to help with aiding in fat loss.

Is there gluten in whey protein powders?

The short answer is there can be.  Whey protein powders are sold in one of only three forms: concentrate, isolate, or hydrosolate.  The only common ingredient in each of these is whey protein.

Each of these three types of whey protein in its purest form does not contain any gluten.  However, many times additives will be included within the protein powder blend which will contain gluten.

Any powder that contains wheat, barley, or rye will not be gluten-free.  Another major additive to look out for is glutamine, which is derived from wheat protein and also contains gluten.

Additional ingredients that could (but do not necessarily) contain gluten include food starch, malt sugar, caramel color, dextrin, and maltodextrin.
